Molecular weight is one of the first numbers you’ll see on a peptide’s spec sheet. It simply describes how heavy the molecule is — and it’s useful for confirming identity and for research calculations. Here’s a plain-English explainer.

What is molecular weight?

Molecular weight (MW) is the combined mass of every atom in the molecule. For a peptide, that’s the sum of its amino-acid residues. Because each peptide bond releases a water molecule, the total is the residue masses minus one water per bond. MW is usually written in daltons (Da).

Why molecular weight matters

  • Identity: mass spectrometry measures MW to confirm a vial contains the right peptide — see the Certificate of Analysis.
  • Calculations: MW lets you convert between mass (mg) and moles for research work.
  • Comparisons: a bigger peptide has a higher MW — useful context when comparing compounds.
