Agonist and antagonist are two of the most common words in receptor pharmacology — and they’re opposites. One switches a receptor on; the other blocks it. Here’s the simple distinction.
- Agonist: binds a receptor and activates it.
- Antagonist: binds a receptor and blocks it (no activation).
- Both bind the same receptor — they just do opposite things.
The core difference
Picture a receptor as a lock. An agonist is a key that turns it and triggers a response. An antagonist is a key that fits the lock but won’t turn — and while it sits there, it stops other keys from turning it either. So an antagonist effectively silences the receptor.
