  • Antagonist: binds a receptor and blocks it (no activation).
  • Both bind the same receptor — they just do opposite things.

The core difference

Picture a receptor as a lock. An agonist is a key that turns it and triggers a response. An antagonist is a key that fits the lock but won’t turn — and while it sits there, it stops other keys from turning it either. So an antagonist effectively silences the receptor.
